Terms are explained clearly and the examples demonstrate the application of the basic principles very well. For the professional scientist, this is the best primer I know of. My library Help Advanced Book Search.

One reason I am impressed with this text is because of the disorganized and impenetrable presentation of identical material I have seen in other texts. From his classic text on Statistical Mechanics to his recent quantum-first tour de force on Phys ical Chemistry, McQuarrie's best selling textbooks are highly acclaimed by the chemistry community. The hydrogen atom, along with its electronic spectroscopy, is discussed in a separate chapter. Quantum mechanics is not simple but it need not be inaccessible. But you need a good presentation, which is what this text provides.

Perhaps the biggest change in the years since the first edition appeared is the proliferation of computational chemistry programs that are available to calculate molecular properties. Each chapter includes a broad range of problems and exercises. The second edition is loaded with clear and methodical explanations, and a broad array of worthwhile problems. Strongly suggested for acquisition.

Art from the book is available for download into lecture slides by adopting professors. There are a lot of derivations and it's pretty math intensive, but then again, I liked that about this book. And in the following chapter, which is devoted entirely to multielectron atoms, a website for Hartree-Fock atomic orbitals is introduced. Comes very highly recommended from someone I trust, hurrah. The downside is that it doesn't feel like an undergrad textbook. The Schrodinger Equation and a Particle in a Box. It is a remarkably straightforward presentation of quantum mechanics and quantum chemistry.

In classic McQuarrie fashion the problems are well chosen and help develop both key concepts and physical intuition. After learning the structure of these atomic orbitals, they are used to calculate atomic properties for multielectron atoms.
